Titan swiveled his eyes from the road to his playlist and then to Michi in his passenger seat. Her attention was glued to her phone as she posted the video Lexi recorded of her dancing onto their shared page. She hadn’t uttered a word since they left the strip club. Titan wanted to feel her out but drowned out the uneasy silence with music instead. The right words to explain he hadn’t intended to hurt her eluded his mind, so he remained quiet while they wallowed in their conflicting thoughts.

They were almost at his condo when Titan found the heart to tap the volume button on his steering wheel, lowering the music before he grabbed Michi’s hand. The sharp sigh she emitted as he entwined their fingers tugged at his heart. Her pain agonized him. Titan withholding his new spot did more damage than good, and he regretted accepting it without talking to her first.

“Are you mad at me, bae?” He lifted her hand to kiss her knuckles, and she sucked her teeth.

“Don’t try to butter me up, Titan. I’m not mad, but my feelings are hurt.”

“Why? You’re the one that said shit changed once I moved in.”

“But I didn’t want you to leave! I thought about doing the same thing, but—” Michi stalled before angling her body in the seat to face him. “I couldn’t do it, so it hurts to know you could without at least talking to me. You promised you wouldn’t leave me, Titan.”

The obvious disappointment in her tone made him grip her hand tighter. When he stopped at a red light, he glanced in her direction with a playful smile and leaned toward her.

“I like your lil’ pout,” he poked, cupping her chin to kiss her pursed lips. “You don’t get into your feelings often.”

“I bet you love it when I do, huh? You get excited seeing me grovel and get all mushy, like putty in your big ass hands.”

Titan tossed his head back in animated laughter at her unwarranted frustrations. He pulled off before admitting, “Of course I do, but who wouldn’t? It’s nice to know I’m needed by you, Michi. If not, it’s kind of like, why the fuck am I even here? That’s how I feel when you push me away or won’t let me step up. I guess that goes over your big ass head, though.”

“It doesn’t, but it’s hard to let down my guard because I’ve gone through some foul shit with men. I’ve never been able to breathe easy with any guy besides you, Titan. It scares the shit out of me, but I need it at the same time. This feels good. You feel right, so I’m rocking it out until the other shoe drops.”

“See, you made a nigga feel special before you said that. Why does it have to go bad?”

“Because nothing in my life has gone good.”

That discovery pissed Titan off, but also made him determined to show her otherwise. He’d keep Michi tucked in his back pocket for constant protection if he could.
